The Paper Journey Press
was founded in 1998 by Durham writer Sharlene Baker a
creative writing instructor teaching in the Triangle for
a dozen years. When Baker retired in 2002, Wanda
Mukherjee became Editor-in-Chief of the independent
press.
The press will soon
celebrate its 10th birthday. Under Mukherjee's direction
for the past 5 years, The Paper Journey Press continues to
publish offbeat, quirky literary fiction as well as,
poetry and memoir. "We've had some outstanding
successes, said Mukherjee. "When Sharlene first began
the press, she wasn't much interested in publishing
poetry. As time went on, I decided to take the press to
the next level. Ironically, our best seller has been
Twenty Four Names for Mother, a collection of poetry
by Canadian writer Pam Calabrese MacLean."
Mukherjee, who has a keen interest
in art, marries aspiring and established artists to the
novels, poetry, and memoir the press publishes. "It is a
rarity for the press to produce a photo-shopped cover."
Mukherjee is an
award-winning journalist and former creative writing
instructor. "At the end of the day, we want the
books we publish to cause people ponder their world."
Women
Behaving Badly, Feisty Flash Fiction Stories was
featured in an article in the 2005 Novel and Short Story
market about flash fiction as one of the "go-to" books
for those just beginning to experiment in this sub-genre
of the short story. Women Behaving Badly is a
stunning accomplishment, showcasing the talents of
writers from around the world.
Mukherjee said recently of
the press' success, "I am extremely excited about the
direction the Paper Journey is headed. We had a great
year in 2007 and I'm looking forward to 2008."
